Anyone who hikes or bikes along the Trolley Trail that wends its way from Brush Creek southward along Brookside Blvd is sure to have noticed and taken advantage of the inviting patio space that stretches across the front of AIXOIS Bistro [251 East 55th St, KCMO] anchoring the Crestwood shopping district. If you love great coffee, morning pastries, French food, and a casual bistro vibe then it’s likely you have patronized them as well; but if not or just not recently, then let’s get to know them better, especially since their Bastille Day [July 14th] festivities might be just the kind of relaxed [but celebratory] dining experience you seek.

We got the scoop when visiting with owner Megan Langlade while her husband, Chef Emmanuel, was toiling away in the kitchen, which is where he is most often found, although he loves to make frequent visits to the dining rooms to chat with guests. We grabbed his pic peeking out the window by the saute station where regulars often stop by to wish him Bon Jour and chat for a moment while he creates the classic French food that is his lifelong passion. Raised in France, Manny started his training early in his Uncle’s hotel and restaurant; followed it up with culinary school in Provence, emigrated to the US and worked in Washington, DC and also in Charleston, SC at the prestigious Chez Nous.

After moving to KC to be part of another venture, Manny met and married Megan [her background is in theater and film-making], opened his own restaurant, AIXOIS, and became a father – all in the same year. That was 2001. As Megan tells it, the whirlwind of married life, family [5 children total, 2 dogs and we think 2 cats]and owning a small business makes for a very full and happy life. When schedules permit they love to travel with their kids and visit France, of course, when they can. One of the things Megan wanted to point out is that AIXOIS is “genuinely kid friendly.” The Patio space fronts on a fairly large swath of green space which the kids can enjoy while their parents dine and still keep a watchful eye; and the children’s menu is “fresh and healthy.”

Naturally we talked about what is happening with Bastille Day [French Independence Day on July 14th] and how AIXOIS will celebrate. They will have traditional food from the South of France such as the “Salade Nicoise” [our newsletter’s featured recipe] . “This holiday is much like our 4th celebration,” Megan explained, “so “picnic” type foods are common. Lamb Merguez sausage, beef kebabs, and and also the fantastic house ground hamburger “french style” and not to forget pommes frites, truffled or not! Happy hour house wines all day/night and traditional French cocktails!” Many folks bring blankets to spread on the front lawn to listen to whatever live music is scheduled. In addition, this weekend coincides with the Crestwood Shops Sidewalk Sale which runs from July 13 to 15.
