Sometimes a fun, creative job grows out of what might have been just a temporary life choice. That’s where Andrea Maenle finds herself in her 12th year with the Waldo Pizza operations. In September 2004 she started working in their Lee’s Summit location as a server, moved to their home base in Waldo in January 2006 and 10 years later she is now their lead bartender and Bar Manager. Always interested in cooking and baking, Andrea says that “crafting cocktails gives her the same creative opportunities without waiting quite so long for gratification.” When you understand what the customer likes; and then make the perfect cocktail just for them it’s an awesome feeling!”
Andrea is the creative mind behind the Summer special “KC Sling” [the KCO featured recipe this month] that is Waldo Pizza’s take on the classic “Singapore Sling,” made with locally distilled “Rieger Gin” and other yummy tropical ingredients that are quintessentially “summery, & chilled out.” The customer response has been terrific, many of whom are just discovering that in addition to great pizza and an incredible beer selection, Waldo Pizza also offers wines and a comprehensive cocktail program. Granted, that began three years ago, but it remains something of a secret to even some long time WP fans.
We asked Andrea about life out from behind that bar and she says most of her free time is spent whiling away the time with her 3 kids and 3 dogs playing in the parks or swimming at the beach. When the “kids” are not Helping Mom relax, she admits that she does try to watch an occasional movie aimed at grown-ups and indulging her guilty food pleasures, especially sweets. She recommends the “Tex Mex” – style pizza pie at Waldo. With Jalapeno and bacon, it’s “life changing!” When it comes to cocktails she says boldly, “I am a gin girl – and defend the spirit against those who have had a bad experience. My favorite is “The Aviation” cocktail.” Hard to fault that choice of one of 100 basic cocktails all bartenders should have in their bag of mixologist tricks.
So, what should Waldo Pizza customers and those who have never tried them be looking forward to? Of course, the upcoming fall season cocktail menu which is sure to include the “KC Coffee” concocted with a generous splash of Rieger Whiskey and a dollop of house made whipped cream. They are also working on a special kid’s menu as well as on-line ordering and hope to roll out both of these features very soon.
